LAW (Liverpool Advocates for Windrush) supports people affected by the Windrush scandal to resolve their Windrush related - immigration status and access the Windrush Compensation Scheme. We offer trusted, trauma-informed guidance, help gathering evidence and completing applications, referrals to regulated legal advice where needed and peer support through community clinic sessions, Q&As and educational events.

The University of Bolton Legal Advice Bureau (LAB) in collaboration with Bolton Library is a free, student-led public advice service, staffed by law students working under the supervision of experienced volunteer solicitors. We aim to deliver legal support to those members of the local community who cannot afford legal advice or qualify for legal aid. The LAB provides an advice-only service; we cannot offer representation in court or assist those who already have legal representation. We are currently offering appointments in person only at Bolton Library, in the centre of Bolton. At your appointment, you will meet student volunteers and their supervising solicitor who will discuss your matter and offer initial advice. Please email legaladvice@bolton.ac.uk and provide a name, contact telephone number, brief description of your issue and your location. A member of the team will be in touch to discuss the next steps.

Summary of Service

After making initial contact with the Clinic you will be contacted by a student volunteer who will take the full details of your matter. These details will then be reviewed by a solicitor who will confirm whether it is a matter we can assist with. If we are able to assist you we will contact you to arrange an appointment, which will normally be on a Monday afternoon or Thursday evening. If we cannot assist in your matter we will signpost you to other services who may be able to help. During the initial appointment you will speak with two student volunteers who will take the full details of your matter. They will draft a letter of advice under supervision which will be provided to you within two weeks of your appointment. Depending on student availability we may also be able to offer additional services, such as drafting mandatory reconsideration requests and representation at appeal hearings.

We offer free legal advice on family law, employment law, housing law, social security tribunals, personal injury claims, lasting powers of attorney and court of protection matters. We will obtain full instructions from you about your legal issue via a “triage” call where we involve our students and this is then followed up with a clinic advice call with a specialist solicitor. Following the clinic you will receive a letter setting out the advice you were given.
