South Westminster Legal Advice Centre (SWLAC) provides free legal advice to people on low incomes in London. SWLAC is entirely volunteer run and operates two in-person clinics per week on Tuesday and Thursday evenings in Westminster. The service supports clients with legal issues relating to employment, family, consumer, contracts, wills and probate, personal injury and criminal law, among other areas. SWLAC does not provide advice relating to welfare benefits, immigration, debt restructuring or housing law.

Summary of Service

The Innocence Project was founded at Barry Scheck and Peter Neufeld in New York in 1992. There are now a growing number of Innocence Projects in the USA, UK and the rest of the world. The City Law School is proud to be part of only four Innocence Projects operating in the UK today and 72 operating across the world. The City Law School Innocence Project has three primary aims: To review/investigate potential miscarriages of criminal justice. To educate students about wrongful convictions, providing them with practical legal skills. To conduct research together with the Criminal Justice and Human Rights Centre addressing the multiple challenges facing criminal justice both nationally and internationally. As part of The City Law School Innocence project, students will support clients in drafting applications to the Criminal Cases Review Commission (CCRC) under the supervision of qualified criminal lawyers.

The Legal Advice Centre is pleased to announce that we will be offering free legal advice to members of the Black community in circumstances where they; 1) have faced employment discrimination and/or who have potential claims under the Equality Act 2) have a potential civil action against the police including for false imprisonment, unlawful detention and loss of liberty, Data Protection Act/misuse of private information claims, malicious prosecution, and trespass to property or goods 3) are part of the Windrush generation and want to apply for financial compensation through the Windrush Compensation Scheme as a result of any losses suffered, from being denied employment, housing, employment or where they may have been mistakenly detained, deported or threatened with removal.
